In Germany, Bavarian Crowned Prince Louis, later King Louis I of Bavaria, married Princess Therese von Sachsen (Hildburghausen). The Bavarian royalty family invited the citizen people of Munich to attend the festivities, held on the fields in front of the city gates. These fields were named ”Therese’s fields", in honor of the princess. The Royal Family was in attendance for the horse races, in which concluded the popular event, and created a traditional celebration all across Bavaria. The celebration was repeated the following years with the same type of festivities making a tradition called, the annual "Oktoberfest". Oktoberfest typically begins in late September and lasts until the first Sunday in October. Beer consumption is a part of the festival, with more than 1 million gallons of beer being consumed annually at Oktoberfest. Along with the traditional celebration certain foods became a staple in the celebration such as, sausages, kraut and German Bavarian Pretzels.

All around Munich you will see people enjoying a soft pretzel, a mid-morning breakfast snack, accompanied by a large mug of Weissbier (Wheat Beer). With our twisted thoughts and creative hands, Chicago Pretzels also celebrates this German tradition called "Oktoberfest", by offering the soft pretzel as part of the traditional German celebration to the Chicagoland area. We call this delicious and unique bread, "Bavarian pretzels made Chicago style"!
German Heritage Chicago Style
Chicago loves the tradiitonal German Bavarian soft pretzel. Many Germans migrated and settled in the Chicagoland area, including one of the Northwest Suburb of Chicago, Schaumburg, Illinois. Chicago Pretzels & Baking Co. was founded in 2003 by the Krause family who resided in Schaumburg, IL. Family, friends and neighbors alike enjoyed the fresh baked pretzels and soon would be ordering them for their own party events. Soon the word was spreading and Chicago Pretzels Baking Co. took their delicious pretzels to the Schaumburg Farmers Market, from there; the business evolved into what it is today, a small family owned and operated business, with excellent pretzel foods and breads. Chicago Pretzels celebrates "Oktoberfest" every day!
